FeaturesUnder The KiltKorey Mac Innis
A new section for a new issue- ‘Under the Kilt’ makes every effort possible to take what you’ve been ignoring for far too long, and lift the veil right in front of your face, balls and all. To start us off, we’re going to talk about the homeless. I’m not here to make you feel bad about ignoring them on Spring Garden Road. I’m telling you that as good as things are—you could be 4-6 fuck ups short of being homeless yourself. It’s no accident you got accepted into University and it’s not uncommon for you to not know what you want to do with your life (even if you say you do). Imagine you have a phone in your hand that has every CEO or world leader’s home number on speed dial, linking you to someone in power who is willing to abide by your every whim. It may not be that way for real but it’s the closest you will ever be to having that level of control in your life. I look at a lot of the street people I see every day, it’s bottle collection that keeps them alive…roughly $10-$12 dollars a day you could make-but it’s a real mad dash to get to them and you have GOT to get up early. It’s a poor soul, putting every scrap of effort they have into it-- and you may ask ‘why not try something else’. My analogy of everyday life for someone like that is as follows: Imagine a rabbit running on a treadmill that never stops and sitting behind it are not one—but a pack of starving wolves tied to a chain just short enough to not reach him. These are people who are nearly spiritually and mentally depleted…there is no time or chance to switch things up…can’t just “Go GET A JOB!” like most want them to. You stop to think about anything besides bottles and its instant starvation or worse, fall victim to the night below 0 celsius. These are the ones who really suffer, so next time there’s a discrepancy with your B minus on a mid-term assignment…stop and think. Just how good you really got it.
